industries. It can be used to disinfect drinking water, prevent the growth of algae and shellfish, control odors in water and wastewater treatment plants, and more. Many different types of titanium materials are available for sodium hypochlorite. The main product use of titanium is storage tanks. Titanium storage tanks are the best material choice for sodium hypochlorite.The grade commonly used is Commercial Pure Grade 2. While titanium tanks cost significantly more than carbon steel or other materials,titanium tanks can be used for very unusual requirements, i.e., a virtually unlimited service life without failure.

Sodium hypochlorite, also known as bleach and hypochlorous acid, is a strong oxidizer of ionic compounds with unique properties that can be used for water disinfection and cleaning purposes. How to store them safely is a challenge because when spilled or leaked, they can cause catastrophic accidents in industrial sites or workplaces. Sodium hypochlorite requires protection from UV rays, oxidation and outgassing.

 

There are three factors to consider when storing sodium hypochlorite;
1. Ultraviolet light can degrade sodium hypochlorite, so special precautions must be taken to reduce this effect.
2. Sodium hypochlorite usually contains transition metals such as nickel, iron and copper, which can accumulate in storage tanks and generate exhaust gas. Sodium hypochlorite is compatible with only a small subset of metals, including titanium, platinum,gold, silver, and tantalum. All other metals cause contamination of the NaOCl solution, which results in product decomposition and increased oxygen production. Stainless steel, copper, brass, Hastelloy and Monel metals should be avoided in NaOCl applications.Copper is probably the most notable on this list due to its increased use in industrial plumbing. Copper tubing can cause elemental copper (Cu 2+ ) to contaminate NaOCl solutions and cause a significant increase in product degradation.
3. Consider the corrosion resistance of the tank material.

Titanium storage tanks for sodium hypochlorite are the most expensive and longest-lasting, and due to titanium’s resistance to NaOCl’s corrosive activity, its service life can reach or even exceed 30 years. Commercially pure grade 2 titanium is the grade commonly used in NaOCl applications. Although the manufacturing cost of titanium containers is high, they have been widely used and promoted in recent years because of their long service life and extremely low maintenance costs.
